Medication management can be confusing for seniors. Half of all Americans do not take their medications as prescribed, resulting in declines in health and function (Schwartz, 2016). Managing medications with a vision impairment or physical limitation creates many other issues. This is an issue which can be the difference between living independently and requiring assistance. Medication management is well within the scope of occupational therapy. This course will educate you in various assessments available and offer techniques to increase the independence of your clients.

1. Occupational Therapy and Medication Management
This chapter will describe OT practitioner’s role in medication management. All healthcare professionals have a role to play in helping clients effectively manage medication. We will discuss available evaluations that can be used to assess your client’s skills with medication management.
2. Medication Management Adaptations
This chapter will discuss setting up a pill planner that will fit the needs of your client. We will show how to mark medication bottles correctly to decrease confusion. You will learn about the latest devices and apps to make medication management easier for your client.
3. Medication Risks and Ways to Decrease Harm
This chapter we will discuss potentially harmful drugs for seniors. We will discuss increased risk of falls associated with certain drugs. We will review several new techniques to increase understanding of medication.
