To borrow from Newton’s third law, every action has a reaction. Behaviors are actions, but how we react to them is pivotal. As healthcare practitioners, we need to recognize the best practices for how to address challenging behaviors when they occur. We can increase, decrease, or have no effect on a child’s behaviors. As part of this course, you will compare different theoretical approaches to addressing challenging behaviors from the clinical and behavioral perspective. Basic behavioral principles from applied behavior analysis, such as reinforcement and punishment, will be defined, and feasibility of carrying out behavioral strategies in healthcare will be discussed.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Common Approaches to Address Behaviors
There are many ways to address behaviors when demonstrated by children, but oftentimes these are not best practices, nor do they even work! Current methods used will be highlighted and rationale presented as to why certain strategies are used and why others should be considered.
2. Best Practices to Address Challenging Behaviors
One of the most effective interventions for addressing challenging behaviors is applied behavior analysis (ABA). The theory guiding ABA will be introduced, as will some basic behavioral principles to be utilized as a foundation to guiding best practices for addressing behaviors in pediatric skilled care.
3. Applying Behavior Strategies to Clinical Practice
Comprehensive, intensive intervention has been identified as the ideal method for addressing behaviors. In clinical practice, this is often not feasible. A focused approach will be presented and examined as a method for targeting behaviors when they occur.
