Chapters & learning objectives
1. The Medical Evaluation
This chapter will focus on the goals of the preparticipation physical evaluation (PPE) for athletes. It covers the variety of requirements, the wide support of the PPE from multiple medical entities, and the value of the event. It will also detail the legal considerations for rehabilitation specialists participating in the PPE. As with any medical interaction, there are legal ramifications. In this case, both HIPPA and FERPA are in play, and the viewer will gain insight into how they impact the PPE. The chapter will also cover the specific topic of right to play.
2. Timing, Administration, and Clearance Paperwork
This chapter will first focus on the timing and administration of the PPE itself. Timing and administration are best completed in the primary care office, but they are often completed in a group setting. Both have benefits and meet the goals of the PPE, and an understanding of this is crucial for those participating. The chapter will conclude with the clearance paperwork for the athlete.
3. Case Studies
Cases will be used to serve as memory tools for the viewer in preparation for the exam or scheduling physicals for their team. These cases will be representative of what athletes may face at the PPE and will shine a light on the importance of the process.
4. Q&A Discussion
In this segment, Phil Plisky and Todd Arnold answer some common questions they have faced in their careers regarding the preparticipation physical evaluation. This discussion can serve as a memory tool for those sitting for the board exam and will convey the importance of the process being done well.
