Chapters & learning objectives
1. Identifying Sensory Modulation Disorder in Infants and Toddlers
This chapter describes sensory processing patterns of neurotypical infants and toddlers and symptoms of sensory modulation disorder in this population. Therapists are educated on techniques for assessing sensory modulation disorder in infants and toddlers through skilled observation, parent interview questions, and symptom checklists. Case studies are analyzed in detail from initial assessment to effective intervention resulting in practical outcomes.
2. Simple Solutions to Manage Sensory Modulation Symptoms in Infants and Toddlers
Chapter two provides therapists with a list of practical sensory solutions to help caretakers with the management of sensory modulation symptoms in infants and toddlers. Each sensory system is highlighted with useful sensory strategies targeting the three subtypes of sensory modulation disorder: Sensory Over-Responsivity, Sensory Under-Responsivity, and Sensory Seeking/Craving. Therapists develop a repertoire of sensory solutions for effective collaboration between therapist and caretaker for carryover into daily routines.
3. Sensory Strategies for Childhood Occupations in Early Intervention
Chapter three provides therapists with real-world sensory strategies that are integrated into the childhood occupations of infants and toddlers. These interventions aid infants and toddlers with developmental skills necessary for everyday life activities such as playing, eating, sleeping, bathing, and dressing. Therapists will synthesize knowledge with understanding to create a comprehensive and valuable treatment plan to help parents feel hopeful and empowered in helping their child.
