SCI Part 1: Comprehensive Approach to Spinal Cord Injury
Presented by J.J. Mowder-Tinney
Identifying optimal intervention strategies for patients with spinal cord injury can be very challenging for clinicians. Spinal cord injuries present with different limitations and specific patient needs, requiring a strong understanding of the functional outcomes for each level of injury. The best way to begin treating any patient with a spinal cord injury is with a clear understanding of common complications seen in this population. In this course, J.J. Mowder-Tinney emphasizes the priority complications that impact safety and function, and demonstrates providing explicit treatment adjustments for optimal outcomes. In addition, this course reviews appropriate goals and optimal treatment options for someone with a high cervical-level injury. This course involves multiple demonstrations with real patients who have cervical-level injuries. This course is appropriate for PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and nurses and can be utilized in any patient setting.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Introduction and Goals for People With Spinal Cord Injury
This chapter will review SCI demographics and the most common levels of injury. The different functional implications and goals of each injury will be discussed to assist in developing an appropriate plan of care.
2. Life-Threatening Complications of People With SCI
This chapter will differentiate common life-threatening complications of people with SCI. These types of complications must be identified early, with immediate interventions put in place. Emphasis will be placed on patients being educated on each of the priority steps to promote independence and safety.
3. Complication Concerns in People With Early SCI
This chapter will differentiate common early complications and concerns seen in people with SCI. Emphasis will be placed on the direct impact on function and how to provide prevention and treatment.
4. Complications Impacting Function of People With SCI
This chapter will differentiate complications that commonly impact people with SCI and their ability to be independent. Emphasis will be placed on the direct impact on function and how to provide prevention and treatment.
5. Interventions for Someone With C4/C5-Level Injury
This chapter will describe key strategies required when treating people with a C4/C5 level of injury. Priority goals will be emphasized along with clear and specific instructions on how to prioritize the assessment and treatment of someone with this level of injury.
