The influence of sleep (both good and poor quality) carries over into many different dimensions of health, and its impact is often underestimated and poorly understood by both patients and clinicians alike. Poor sleep affects cognition, mental processing, and performance. Poor sleep on a regular basis also shortens the lifespan and increases the risk for developing chronic diseases. A proper understanding is the first step necessary to enable and facilitate changes in lifestyle that can promote quality sleep and, in turn, improve overall health. This is the perfect course for clinicians from all disciplines interested in gaining a better understanding of how sleep influences health and how to screen for disordered sleep, as well as actionable management strategies.

Chapters & learning objectives
2. Sleep and Performance
This chapter provides an overview of how sleep affects cognition and, in turn, performance.
3. The Effects of Poor Sleep on Health
This chapter describes the relationship that poor sleep has with the onset, development, and progression of chronic diseases (diabetes and other metabolic syndromes, cardiovascular disorders, mental health disorders, etc). It also summarizes the evidence linking poor sleep in adolescence to chronic disease, emphasizing the need to focus on healthy lifestyle choices early in life.
4. Sleep in the Context of Holistic Health
This chapter puts sleep into the context of holistic overall health. It discusses the role of lifestyle choices and how these factors influence health status. The quality of sleep is greatly affected by lifestyle choices, and this chapter provides an argument for why clinicians need to incorporate a larger, holistic approach to health.
5. How Do I Know if Patients Have Sleep Problems?
This chapter covers approaches and specific tools that can be used to identify if sleep is a problem. Tools, algorithms, and aides for decision-making are provided.
6. How Do I Start Addressing Sleep in Clinical Practice?
This chapter covers clinical application and strategies for improving sleep in practice. Strategies and aides for decision-making, as well as appropriate tiered management and education strategies are discussed.
