Learning Objectives

  • Apply evidence-based clinical decision-making principles when evaluating and treating dysphagia and related SLP concerns in patients receiving ECMO.
  • Integrate opportunities for collaboration among critical care and rehabilitation team members to support coordinated, patient-centered care throughout the ECMO continuum.
  • Examine patient-specific risk factors that may contribute to swallowing, communication, voice, and cognitive deficits in individuals receiving ECMO and relate these factors to potential etiologies that inform SLP assessment and intervention planning.
  • Examine the basic mechanisms of ECMO support and differentiate common cardiac and respiratory conditions that may necessitate ECMO therapy, with consideration for their impact on rehabilitation and SLP-related outcomes.
