Top-of-Scope PT Practice Symposium Part 2

Presented by , Stephen Ramsey, and Lisa VanHoose

Description

Physical therapists are too often confined to the roles, settings, and mental models traditional practice was built around, leaving valuable expertise underused just when patients, communities, and health systems need it most. This symposium challenges that ceiling. Across four expert-led sessions, physical therapists will trace top-of-scope practice across the full continuum of care: reimagining PT's reach across society and nonclinical roles, embedding prevention and population health into primary practice, using point-of-care ultrasound to become an active contributor to ICU medical management, and applying public health data to strengthen clinical reasoning in oncology survivorship. Each 60-minute presentation is followed by 30 minutes of live Q&A with the presenting expert. Designed primarily for physical therapists working across acute care, outpatient, community, and specialty settings, with content also relevant to other rehabilitation professionals, this symposium equips clinicians with concrete frameworks to expand their scope of impact, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and practice at the top of their scope.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish top-of-scope, medical management contributing PT practice in critical care from the traditional mover of patients, equipment selection, and disposition planning role
  • Apply the MENTOR clinical reasoning framework to plan a mobility or exercise session as a physiologic stress test that generates objective data for the medical team
  • Construct patient-specific considerations and contingency plans using point-of-care ultrasound findings before mobilizing a critically ill patient
  • Integrate point-of-care ultrasound and clinical exam findings to objectively assess a patient's physiologic response, tolerance versus intolerance, to a mobility or exercise intervention
  • Construct a structured report to the interdisciplinary team that communicates the patient's response, the clinical rationale for that response, and a specific ask for optimizing future sessions
  • Select publicly available datasets that provide relevant information about cancer burden, health status, functional risk, environmental conditions, and community resources
  • Analyze population and community-level data to identify factors that may inform clinical questions and rehabilitation priorities for cancer survivors
  • Distinguish conventional impairment-focused rehabilitation from top-of-scope practice that anticipates risk and incorporates preventive, restorative, and function-preserving strategies
  • Construct context-responsive oncology rehabilitation strategies that optimize function and participation by integrating clinical findings with relevant public data
