Parkinson’s disease and related disorders are systemic disorders resulting in complex issues impacting health, function, and participation. Therapists must be equipped to provide care in an ever-changing healthcare environment. This course provides the therapist with advanced knowledge in the management of the client with Parkinson’s disease across all stages of the disease and incorporates current clinical practice guidelines. Information is presented using a case study example interwoven with evidence-based information. On completion of this course, the therapist will be able to use evidence-based intervention techniques for the management of clients with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders across the full spectrum of the disease.

1. Interventions to Modify Disease and Improve Mobility, Function, and Participation
In this chapter, the clinician will learn advanced concepts regarding the management of the client with Parkinson’s disease using specific exercise protocols. Current evidence for managing primary activity limitations will be presented and appraised.
2. Clinical Practice Guidelines for Physical Therapy
In this chapter, the clinician is presented with advanced concepts regarding the management of the client with Parkinson’s disease by applying current clinical practice guidelines.
3. Management Across Disease Stages
In this chapter, the clinician is presented with advanced concepts regarding the management of the client with Parkinson’s disease across the course of the disease using a dental care model.
4. Physical Therapy for Rare Parkinsonian Syndromes
In this chapter, we cover treatments for parkinsonian syndromes, including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and corticobasal degeneration (CBD). A discussion of how to apply evidence to develop treatment plans for individuals with rare diseases is included.
