Application of Pain Neuroscience Education
Presented by Adriaan Louw
Evidence, consisting of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, for pain neuroscience education is growing. In contrast, little is known of the how-to clinical application of pain neuroscience education. How do these pain metaphors look? How do they sound? This is an introductory course for athletic trainers, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, and other licensed medical providers in inpatient, outpatient, home health, and school settings. Clinicians will see firsthand how pain neuroscience education is applied to a patient with persistent pain. Various symptoms will be explained via metaphors, examples, and images. Chapters & learning objectives
1. Before Pain Neuroscience Education
This chapter will cover various preparatory strategies to be implemented prior to pain neuroscience education (PNE). It will also include information on reasoning to implement PNE and determination of which patients will maximally benefit from PNE.
2. Clinician Perspective: Pain Neuroscience Education
This chapter will overview how to clinically prepare the patient for PNE as well as answer common concerns about PNE. It will also lay out expected effects post implementation of PNE.
3. The Sensitive Alarm System
This chapter discusses four easy-to-recall metaphors that can be used during pain neuroscience education to help patients understand the physiology of pain as well as lay the groundwork to answer the question “How can you help me?”
4. Pain Neuroscience Education: Clinical Demonstration, Part 1
This chapter shows a demonstration of the implementation of pain neuroscience education with an actual patient in a clinical setting.
5. Pain Neuroscience Education: Clinical Demonstration, Part 2
In part 2, we will continue a demonstration of the implementation of pain neuroscience education with an actual patient in a clinical setting.
