This course will update clinicians on application of new neuroscience for interdisciplinary management of cognitive and communication issues associated with right-hemisphere stroke that apply across disciplines, including nursing, and impact ADL outcomes. Those issues that affect OT, PT, and speech and benefit from interdisciplinary coordination include hemispatial neglect, problems with gestalt visual processing, and difficulties with organization and executive functions.

1. Treatment Approaches for Cognitive-Communication Impairments, Including Attention, Memory, Simultagnosia, and Prosody
Chapter 1 reviews evidence-based approaches for cognitive impairments, including attention and memory disorders, perspective taking, impulsivity, and self-regulation. In addition, it covers intervention for simultagnosia and aprosodias. These capacities are essential for independence in activities of daily living and interactional satisfaction.
2. Treatment Approaches for Other Cognitive-Communication Disorders
Chapter 2 covers interdisciplinary approaches to treatment of emotional perception deficits, group treatment approaches, and treatment of theory of mind (ToM) and executive function. Inclusion of family for collaborative interventions is also covered. The role of the family can be especially important after RH stroke when patients themselves are unaware of many of their issues.
3. Interdisciplinary Communication and Coordination of Treatment for Patients With Right-Hemisphere Stroke
Chapter 3 will go over coordination of anosognosia treatment, music therapy, communication with and incorporation of family members in treatment approaches, dynamic coaching, and group treatment approaches.
