Metabolic Crossroads: Where Nutrition Meets Chronic Disease (Recorded Webinar)
Video Runtime: 88 Minutes; Learning Assessment Time: _ Minutes

This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from those of standard Medbridge courses.

This webinar examines the intersection of nutrition, chronic illness, and functional capacity through an advanced practice perspective. It will explore how metabolic changes associated with chronic illness impact nutritional needs and subsequent nutrition interventions. This session will provide practical, evidence-based strategies that healthcare providers can use to support patient-centered chronic disease management.

Learning Outcomes
  • Appraise the intersection of chronic health conditions and nutritional status to determine their combined impact on the aging client
  • Interpret the role of nutrition in mitigating clinical complications—such as systemic inflammation and sarcopenia—that impede therapy progression and participation in daily activities
  • Evaluate how specific pathological states, including malignancy and surgical trauma, alter metabolic demands and muscle physiology in older adults
  • Prioritize supportive nutrition interventions for chronic illnesses based on the client’s specific metabolic and functional requirements
  • Formulate practical, evidence-based nutritional recommendations designed to optimize long-term health outcomes in the geriatric population

Aging in the Era of Chronic Illness: Understanding the Growing Burden

1. Aging in the Era of Chronic Illness: Understanding the Growing Burden

This chapter examines the prevalence and patterns of chronic conditions later in life and the clinical implications of managing nutritional needs and rehabilitation outcomes.

Feeding the Fix: Nutrition as the Driver of Muscle Repair and Resilience

2. Feeding the Fix: Nutrition as the Driver of Muscle Repair and Resilience

Illness and injury alter nutritional needs and demands. All healthcare providers should recognize the impact of surgery on muscle health and rehabilitation.

Nutrition as Cardiovascular Medicine: Reducing Risk in Diabetes and Heart Disease

3. Nutrition as Cardiovascular Medicine: Reducing Risk in Diabetes and Heart Disease

Diabetes and heart disease share a metabolic found, and dietary patterns shape glycemic control, blood lipids, and long-term risk. This session will provide strategies to manage and control dietary variables and improve outcomes.
