The field of voice disorders encompasses a wide variety of structural, functional, and neurogenic pathologies. There can also be overlap between these categories, making it challenging to differentiate and correctly diagnose. Appropriate treatment recommendations are based on accurate multidisciplinary diagnosis and consensus. This course focuses on understanding the important differences between structural, functional, and neurogenic vocal pathologies. This knowledge will dictate the types of treatment recommendations, including pharmacologic, phonosurgery, time and rest, physiological voice rehabilitation, or combined modalities of treatment. Cases will be presented to provide examples of how to differentiate between pathologies and to choose basic treatment approaches that would be appropriate.
Learning Objectives
- Examine the differences between the major types of vocal pathologies
- Examine the multidisciplinary evaluation and diagnosis of vocal pathologies
- Apply differential diagnosis to vocal pathologies
- Conclude appropriate diagnosis of a vocal pathology

2. Multidisciplinary Differential Diagnosis
The multidisciplinary evaluation model will be applied, and a decision tree for differential diagnosis will be used to help determine a diagnosis.
3. Differential Treatment Plans
Common treatment options will be examined, including pharmacologic, surgical, and laryngeal rehabilitation. Reassessment after initial treatment will be emphasized to judge outcomes, and differential treatments will be determined.
