Orthopedic Mentorship Series: Elbow

Presented by Jared Vagy

Video Runtime: 77 Minutes; Learning Assessment Time: 24 Minutes

Effective management of elbow pathology requires a sophisticated understanding of regional interdependence and differential diagnosis to distinguish between local tendinopathy and referred symptoms. This course utilizes a clinical mentorship framework to guide healthcare providers through the complex process of synthesizing subjective history and objective findings for patients presenting with lateral elbow pain and mobility restrictions. By examining two distinct patient cases—a computer programmer with chronic insidious pain and an athlete with post-traumatic stiffness—participants will learn to identify primary and secondary tissue restrictions and implement a multimodal treatment plan. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based interventions, including radial nerve mobilizations, thoracic spine manipulation, and progressive loading programs. Clinicians will gain the skills to move beyond symptomatic treatment toward restoring optimal movement patterns through targeted education and activity modification.

Learning Outcomes
  • Identify strategies for gathering a detailed patient history during a subjective examination
  • Recognize effective objective exam techniques and measures used to identify physical impairments and functional limitations
  • Outline treatment strategies observed during interventions that aim to increase patient participation in daily activities
  • Infer methods for synthesizing subjective, objective, and intervention data to support clinical decision-making
  • Match evidence-based research findings to specific patient cases observed in clinical practice

Chapters & learning objectives

Introduction

1. Introduction

This chapter lays the groundwork for the case presentation process by introducing the framework and preparing you for the upcoming patient cases.

Case #1: Evan

2. Case #1: Evan

This case study focuses on a patient with chronic lateral elbow pain and emphasizes the differential diagnosis between local muscle performance deficits and peripheral nerve mechanosensitivity. Learners will explore the role of the thoracic spine and radial nerve excursion in managing lateral elbow tendinopathy.

Case #2: Kacey

3. Case #2: Kacey

This study addresses post-traumatic elbow stiffness and distinguishes joint from soft tissue limitations in extension. The discussion highlights the importance of regional interdependence, specifically how shoulder and scapular stability influence elbow function during weight-bearing activities.
