Communicating with patients and residents who are hard of hearing or deaf can create challenges in any healthcare setting. Yet, removing communication barriers and ensuring that communication is respectful and effective for everyone is important for providing person-centered care and supporting the unique needs of each individual in your care.

In this course, we'll discuss different kinds of hearing loss, the impact of hearing loss or deafness, and the accessibility standard that you are required to meet. We'll look at strategies to improve communication with residents and patients who are deaf or hard of hearing as well as assistive technology to support communication.

This course helps meet the regulatory standards outlined in the Rehabilitation Act of 1973: Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): Title II & III; Affordable Care Act (ACA): Section 1557; and federal regulations for long-term care 42 ?483.10(g). This course is also aligned with ACHC home health and hospice standards.
