Increased understanding of the negative impacts of restraints has led to efforts to reduce them in healthcare settings. Restraints may be used in hospitals but in limited circumstances to keep patients and others safe. It also is important to know alternative approaches to best support optimal patient health outcomes.
In this course, we'll discuss the history of restraints in healthcare and the kinds of restraints used in hospitals. You'll learn what seclusion is in the hospital setting and the limited times when restraints can be used in hospitals. Finally, you will explore ways to reduce the use of restraints and seclusion in the hospital environment.
This course helps meet the regulatory standards outlined in the requirements for hospitals 42 CFR ?482.13(e).
