This course, intended for the physical therapist, occupational therapist, or athletic trainer, will outline the anatomy and biomechanics involved in the baseball pitching motion. The unique profile of the baseball pitcher will be presented, which will help the clinician better understand and deliver a quality plan of care. An evidence-based approach to some of the common baseball injuries and a general treatment regimen will also be presented to educate the clinician. At the end of this course, the rehabilitation specialist should be able to evaluate and treat a baseball pitcher with much more confidence.

Leonard (Lenny) Macrina is the cofounder and director of physical therapy at Champion Physical Therapy and Performance in Waltham, Massachusetts. He received his master's degree in physical therapy from Boston University. 1. Introduction

The anatomy, biomechanics, and unique profile of the baseball pitcher will be presented. It is critical that the learner understand this information in order to best assess and treat a baseball pitcher.

2. Assessment

This chapter will aid the rehabilitation specialist in understanding how to evaluate a baseball pitcher based off of the previous chapter’s information. In order to develop a good treatment program, the clinician should be able to evaluate numerous components that are often implicated as an injury risk. These include strength of the upper and lower body along with range of motion of the shoulder and elbow.

3. Common Injuries

This chapter will educate the clinician on common injuries observed in the baseball pitcher. Special considerations for the exact anatomy and mechanism of injury will be presented to aid in building a care plan for the athlete.

4. Treatment

This chapter will present an evidence-based treatment approach for the baseball pitcher. The latest research will be used to apply this knowledge to a well-designed treatment regimen to safely and quickly return the pitcher to the mound.
