1. Ethics Standards and Practice Acts
This chapter addresses health professional ethics and blended ethicolegal standards. It also introduces the Alabama PT Practice Act and Administrative Code.
2. Foundations of Professional Ethics and Ethicolegal Duties, and APTA Code of Ethics
The chapter discusses the ethical dimensions of professional practice in the context of the APTA’s Code of Ethics’ eight principles. Other topics include ethicolegal decision-making models, core values, pro bono service delivery, and the five bases for health care malpractice liability.
3. Patient Autonomy
This chapter explores the four sources of biomedical ethical obligations and the concept of patient informed consent and its exceptions. It also evaluates reporting statutes, including select Alabama reporting laws.
4. Alabama PT Practice Act and Board of Physical Therapy Administrative Code, Part 1
This chapter reviews the Alabama PT Practice Act and Board of Physical Therapy Administrative Code. Specific topic areas include the scope of PT practice, referral sources and practice without referral, roles of PT extenders, licensing regulations, allowable names and titles, the nature of regulatory agencies, and composition and powers of the PT Board.
5. Alabama PT Practice Act and Board of Physical Therapy Administrative Code, Part 2
This chapter continues discussion of the Alabama PT Practice Act and Board of Physical Therapy Administrative Code. Topics include complaints and hearings procedures; license reciprocity and renewal; temporary licenses; continuing education; professional conduct; refusal, suspension, and revocation of a license; professional advertising; and Alabama PT Board COVID-19 and telehealth practice guidelines.
6. Supervision Duties and Minimum Standards, Allowable Delegated Duties of the PTA and Auxiliary Staff, and Good Samaritan Immunity in Alabama
This chapter reviews the complex area of supervision, delegation, and direction in physical therapy practice, focusing on Alabama regulatory requirements. It also overviews the enigmatic topic of Good Samaritan immunity and its application to Alabama physical therapists and assistants.
7. Case-Based Scenarios With Reference to the Alabama PT Practice Act and Administrative Code
The chapter offers four case scenarios presenting ethicolegal practice issues for physical therapists and assistants. Case hypotheticals include contracts, impairment, and two sexual misconduct allegation cases.
