Children on the spectrum often present with difficulty regulating their feelings. This is the first of two courses on how to manage and prevent difficulties with frustration and anxiety. This course describes how caregivers can best think about difficult moments with children in order to achieve better outcomes. With the right understanding, caregivers can manage their own emotions to better manage the emotions of their clients. Ways to de-escalate crises and help children regulate themselves are described. When problems repeat themselves, we must understand the triggers to those problems so we can eventually prevent, rather than simply react, to these challenges. Seven common categories of triggers to frustration and anxiety are outlined in detail.

1. Introduction to Challenging Behavior
Understand the fear behind defiant behavior and learn when traditional discipline can escalate the problem. Research on attributional style shows how caregivers can think about challenging behaviors in order to stay calm and achieve better outcomes.
2. Managing and Prevention of Challenging Behavior
The underlying issues that contribute to a greater likelihood of anxiety and frustration related meltdowns are described. This course will share the three step process of behavior management and prevention. Seven common categories of triggers that lead to problematic anxiety and frustration are reviewed.
