This session will focus on defining feeding/swallowing disorders (FSDs) in infants and children and discussing the prevalence and characteristics of these disorders, as well as identifying underlying etiologies and the impact of these problems on the development system.

1. What are feeding/swallowing disorders (FSD) in children
This chapter will provide an overview of FSD, and the prevalence and incidence of these problems in children. Challenges/barriers for understanding and managing these problems will be reviewed. This information establishes the framework for appreciating these problems, which are increasing in frequency.
2. Swallowing and Swallowing Development
This chapter will review the development and purposes of fetal swallowing, and review typical post-natal feeding/swallowing. This includes functions, global changes and recent data. This chapter will finish with a review of the phases of swallowing and their functions
3. Disruptions in Phases of Swallowing
Common etiologies underlying the development of feeding/swallowing disorders will be reviewed, the manifestation of the typical problems and their prognosis for change will be reviewed in this chapter. It will also cover categories of disruptions and identification of populations at risk for disruptions.
4. Q&A Panel Discussion
This section will summarize the sections covered and identify next steps: evaluation and management. There will be a review of FSD’s and impact of the problems and an identification of the next steps.
