This is part two of a two-part series on Conversation Groups for Individuals with Aphasia. Please watch part one before viewing this course. Conversation is considered to be one of the core areas of deficit for those living with aphasia. We know that enhancing life participation and quality of life are consistent with the World Health Organization framework and ASHA's Scope of Practice for speech-language pathologists. But how can we assist individuals with aphasia (PWA) to become better communicators and achieve a better quality of life? The second part of this course, with Dr. Roberta J. Elman, describes clinical techniques that the facilitator can use to improve both communication ability and psychosocial functioning for PWA. Videotaped examples from an aphasia conversation group demonstrate a variety of effective techniques and strategies. Specific suggestions for program implementation, including efficient documentation, developing treatment goals, and navigating funding issues, are shared.

1. Clinical Strategies and Techniques

The first chapter describes a variety of clinical strategies and techniques that the group facilitator can use to address participation of individual group members as well as manage the group as a whole.

2. Clinical Strategies and Techniques, Continued

The second chapter describes clinical strategies and techniques that the facilitator can use to increase conversational control and initiation of individual group members.

3. Group Structure and Format

The third chapter will describe various structural and format options that a group facilitator should consider before starting an aphasia conversation group or a specialized aphasia group.

4. Treatment Goals, Documentation, and Funding Issues

There are unique challenges for the clinician when multiple clients participate in treatment simultaneously. The fourth chapter will share a variety of suggestions that are both efficient and effective for writing individual goals and documenting session performance. Information about funding and reimbursement issues specific to aphasia groups will also be addressed.
