This course will address specific examination tools, treatment interventions, and return-to-play considerations for the adolescent athlete sustaining a sports-related concussion. The multifactorial domains of concussion rehabilitation will be addressed for each section of rehabilitation to include cervical musculoskeletal system, vestibulo-oculomotor function, autonomic dysfunction/exertional tolerance, and motor function. The general physical therapy practitioner lacks experience in treating a sports-related concussion in the adolescent athlete due to lack of patient volume in the clinic and decreased course accessibility. This course will help to bridge the gap and provide the viewer with baseline knowledge in examining, treating, and returning to sport the adolescent athlete who sustained a sports-related concussion.

Alexa Martinez is a physical therapist at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, Florida. She is a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. This chapter will cover how motor function plays a role in concussion rehabilitation and address specific examination tools, treatment strategies, and return-to-play considerations for the adolescent athlete rehabilitating from a sports-related concussion.
