With the continued demand to manage spasticity to improve functional outcomes/performance and maximize independence, clinicians need up-to-date information on options for spasticity reduction and increasing range of motion. Starting with an overview of casting theory, this course provides clinicians with rationale behind inhibitory casting and evidence supporting its use. Case studies will be presented to provide examples of casting options and rationalization. Instructors will discuss the potential benefits, precautions and contraindications of inhibitory casting as well as materials needed. The course concludes with an in-depth discussion of the general principles of casting. This is the first in a three course series. Be sure to also watch:

1. The Physiological Theory and Terminology Behind Inhibitory Casting
Spasticity affects more than an estimated 10 million people worldwide, limiting their ability to fully engage in their life roles and maximize their quality of life. In this chapter we will introduce the terminology and theory behind inhibitory casting and how casting can assist with physiological changes in the spastic muscle.
2. Evidence-Based Medicine
Inhibitory casting has been used for over 40 years to assist with decreasing spasticity. In this chapter we examine current research and use case studies to illustrate situations in which inhibitory casting was used effectively.
3. Advantages, Disadvantages, Goals, and Clinical Decision Making Process for Inhibitory Casting
Therapists need to make decisions about how to most effectively treat their patients on a daily basis. In this chapter we will dissect this decision making process for utilizing inhibitory casting as a treatment modality, discuss the casting options, and the advantages and disadvantages of inhibitory casting.
4. Precautions, Contraindications, and Principles of Inhibitory Casting
Inhibitory casting has been recommended… now what? In this chapter we will discuss the general principles of inhibitory casting and the materials needed to fabricate a cast.
