The ability to synchronize motor movements with a steady auditory beat is fundamental for academic performance & the development and rehabilitation of cognitive, communicative, sensory, & motor skills. Published studies have consistently demonstrated the direct link between auditory-motor synchronization and temporal processing, or the coordinated communication between critical neural networks involved in attention, auditory & phonological processing, reading fluency & comprehension, cognitive speed, working memory, executive functions, and fine/gross motor coordination. Many of these studies have implicated poor timing & rhythm in individuals with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder, Aphasia, Parkinson's, Schizophrenia, and other neurological conditions. Interactive Metronome(R) (IM) is a highly effective and engaging assessment & training tool that uniquely combines the concept of a musical metronome with a computer-based, patented software program to precisely measure & train a person's timing & rhythm in order to improve performance at home, school, work & play. Join us for this stimulating on-demand certification course that includes an in-depth discussion of the evidence and rationale for use of IM as it relates to students and patients encountered in academic and therapy settings. Participants will complete 8 certification coaching modules delivered in rich video format with supplemental readings and direct, hands-on training for use of the Interactive Metronome technology. Completion of this course leads to full Interactive Metronome Certification and contact hours (pending successful completion of a written exam following each module).

Download Learning Objectives

1. IM Module 1

Rationale & empirical evidence for incorporating a rhythm & timing intervention in the remediation of articulation & phonological speech disorders, language & cognitive-linguistic disorders.

2. IM Module 2

Setting up hardware and software for patient use. Setting up the treatment environment for patient needs & comfort to facilitate optimal outcomes. Navigating software controls to deliver IM training in a hierarchical fashion.

3. IM Module 3

Implementation of IM assessments & how they complement standardized & functional speech-language & cognitive-linguistic assessments. Interpretation of IM assessment scores and how they relate to function. Labs encourage learning & critical thinking.

4. IM Module 4

Establishing functional & measurable goals for remediation of speech-language & cognitive-linguistic disorders using an established hierarchy and strategies for clinical troubleshooting. Emphasis on patient selection, auditory-motor synchronization without feedback, providing cues and assistance to the patient to facilitate progress, & ongoing assessment. Labs encourage learning & critical thinking.

5. IM Module 5

Evaluating when to advance to include auditory-visual feedback for timing & rhythm (a skill linked to speech, language & literacy skills in peer reviewed research), continued emphasis on auditory-motor synchronization, providing cues and assistance to the patient to facilitate better timing, & ongoing assessment. Labs encourage learning & critical thinking.

6. IM Module 6

Recognizing when to wean from cues & assistance, when to introduce additional cognitive load (i.e., games), & how/when to adjust IM training settings to facilitate further improvement in timing & rhythm. Labs encourage learning & critical thinking.

7. IM Module 7

Generalizing basic timing skills to improve timing, rhythm & praxis in order to facilitate neural synchronization, & more efficient use of cognitive resources for communication and learning. Labs encourage learning & critical thinking.

8. IM Module 8

Accessing, selecting & interpreting IM reports to demonstrate patient progress. Communicating with 3rd party payors regarding service delivery when IM training is included. Billing for services using appropriate CPT codes. Labs encourage learning & critical thinking.

9. IM Module 9

Set-up and use of IM Portable Pro Unit (PPU) to facilitate bedside training for clients with reduced stamina, schedule constraints, or cognitive/physical limitations. This module is not included in the CEU calculation for this course.
