Women with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) have a high rate of pelvic floor disorders, and EDS and HSD are highly prevalent in women with pelvic health impairments. PTs and OTs taking this course will recognize EDS/HSD in their patients with pelvic health impairments. They will formulate clinical reasoning and treatment approaches for pelvic floor disorders to account for this condition and will be better able to serve the needs of women with EDS/HSD.

1. Screening for Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) in Women With Pelvic Health Impairments

Hypermobility disorders are widely underdiagnosed and unrecognized. When a woman with a pelvic floor disorder seeks rehabilitation treatment, PTs and OTs can perform screening to identify EDS/HSD. Considerations for treatment may be impacted by the diagnosis of or suspicion of EDS/HSD.

2. Bladder, Bowel, and Prolapse Pelvic Floor Disorders in Women With EDS/HSD

Urinary and bowel symptoms and pelvic organ prolapse are highly prevalent in women with EDS/HSD. EDS/HSD may impact pelvic organs as it does other connective tissues in the body. PTs and OTs will learn considerations for effective rehabilitation treatment planning in women with bladder, bowel, and prolapse symptoms and connective tissue hypermobility.

3. Pelvic Pain in Women With EDS/HSD

Rehabilitation decision-making and treatment of women with pain in the pelvis and pelvic girdle is impacted by connective tissue hypermobility. In this chapter, PTs and OTs will learn strategies for treatment that account for hypermobility conditions.
