Return-to-play rates for both upper extremity and lower extremity conditions reveal that rehabilitation professionals might not be providing their athletes adequate physical preparation for return to play. In addition, reinjury rates for some injuries, like ACL reconstructions, are high. Therefore, our assessment of physical readiness for return to play may also be inadequate to reduce the risk of reinjury. The purpose of this webinar is to review evidence-based screening and testing procedures to determine physical readiness for performance training, and to help the rehabilitation professional design programming to address the specific needs of the athlete in order to optimize status at return to play and, eventually, for performance in sport.

1. Is Your Athlete Ready for Performance Training?

In this chapter, Dr. Lorenz highlights return-to-play rates with various pathologies common in athletes and defines the functional testing algorithm. This chapter also provides a review of evidence-based screening measures to determine physical readiness for performance training.

2. Training Program Variables: Sets, Repetitions, Load, Intensity, Progression

This chapter defines training variables of progressive overload, specificity, and variation/periodization as well as considerations for each. Additionally, methods to determine intensity in performance-based rehabilitation are discussed.

3. Physical Qualities of Performance and How to Train Them

This chapter provides strategies to improve strength, power, speed, and elastic strength. This chapter also defines and discusses the force-velocity curve.

4. Question and Answer Session

This section is a viewer-submitted question and answer session facilitated by Dr. Lorenz.
