This course provides current guidelines for exercise during the postpartum period, warning signs and symptoms, and recommendations for when it is safe to start exercising after delivery. The four components of exercise intensity, duration, frequency, and type are discussed, and techniques for assisting postpartum women with common conditions that may affect exercise tolerance are demonstrated. This course is appropriate for health care professionals who work with postpartum women in a clinic or class setting.

An overview of cesarean section and vaginal delivery recovery are discussed, including specific postpartum exercise methods. Guidelines for determining when it is safe for a postpartum woman to return to exercise are listed.
2. Postpartum Exercise Program Design
This chapter describes how to modify exercise intensity, duration, frequency, and type to enable a postpartum woman to start and progress with her fitness routine safely.
3. Postpartum Strength and Flexibility Training
Developing the muscular strength needed for baby care is an important part of a postpartum exercise program. This chapter provides guidelines for developing a strength training routine and specific flexibility exercises for postpartum women.
4. Managing Common Postpartum Issues
This chapter examines conditions that are common during the postpartum period and their effect on recovery. Exercises that target abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and techniques for scar mobilization and proper lifting are demonstrated.
