How can individuals with wrist fracture avoid functional decline? For the individual who incurred a wrist fracture, timely and effective rehabilitation may significantly reduce functional decline. This course will provide the rehabilitation professional with the tools needed to access sensorimotor dysfunction and implement proprioception activities into practice. Incorporating evidence regarding the functional plane of the wrist into practice can improve wrist rehabilitation and inform your practice and treatment of those with wrist fracture. Join Dr. Kristin Valdes as she provides the relevant information to safely and effectively rehabilitate individuals with wrist fracture through instructive graphics, videos of real patients, and detailed illustrations of research literature.

1. Rehabilitation Following ORIF of the Distal Radius Fracture

Early active motion can be initiated after fracture stabilization and can reduce joint stiffness and improve early hand function. The volar plate has been studied to determine the amount of stress that it can withstand and this has implications for therapists regarding application of stress to the healing bone.

2. Adherence to Home Program After Distal Radius Fracture

It has been reported that adherence to the prescribed home program can affect functional outcomes. In this chapter, Dr. Valdes will provide detailed coverage of how adherence to therapy session attendance, a diary of home program performance, and a contract with the therapist may improve adherence and functional outcomes.

3. Sensorimotor Disturbances Following Distal Radius Fracture

After distal radius fracture, proprioception and sensorimotor disturbances have been detected, it is important to incorporate appropriate intervention strategies to improve sensorimotor function to improve wrist balance and stability. Dr. Valdes provides details on which intervention strategies are effective and easily accessible. Learn how best to address proprioception and sensorimotor disturbances through patient videos, practical examples, and an evidence-based approach.
