Individuals with disability and chronic conditions experience changes in their familial and societal roles. Many of these changes may affect the psychological and social factors that influence mental health (i.e. psychosocial wellness) or exacerbate any pre-existing psychosocial disorders or conditions. Rehabilitation nurses play a key role in promoting optimal psychosocial patterns and holistic wellness.

1. Role Relationships and Role Alterations

Individuals occupy many roles and relationships that influence their psychosocial health. Positive role adjustment and relationships have a favorable influence on the overall wellness and recovery of the disabled and chronically impaired population.

2. Cognitive and Psychosocial Disorders Influencing Psychosocial Health

Psychosocial disorders are mental health states caused or influenced by life experiences. The multifaceted nature and diversity of rehabilitation patients puts them at risk for psychosocial disorders. Knowledge of relevant psychosocial disorders influencing the health and wellness of the rehabilitation patient is important for the rehabilitation nurse in providing quality care.

3. Application of Theory and Research to Psychosocial Health Patterns

Relevant theory and research application to psychosocial health is essential when engaging in evidence-based nursing practice. Review of the evidence identifies the best clinical expertise and interventions.

4. Nursing Interventions to Promote Psychosocial Wellness

Chronic illness and disability impairment effects not only the physical, but the psychosocial well-being of the individual. The holistic nature of rehabilitation patient care requires interventions that address psychosocial causation and sequelae effecting the disabled. Rehabilitation nurses must employ strategies to identify wellness goals and promote effective interactions among patients and caregivers.
