Wound debridement, negative-pressure wound therapy, dressings, and coverage selection are vital to understand for the practitioner who is treating a patient who may present with a wound. This course is designed for healthcare practitioners who encounter wounds from injury, surgery, or trauma throughout the continuum of a patient's care (inpatient, outpatient, or home care) and will cover in-depth methods of debridement for removal of devitalized tissue, negative-pressure wound therapy methods, wound coverage options by category for a progressive approach based on wound bed characteristics, and a systematic approach to selecting wound coverage options for best practice. Armed with this knowledge, a practitioner will be better able to problem-solve through simple and challenging wounds to offer the patient the best options for wound treatment to promote closure.

This course is part of the MedBridge CHT Prep Program. Learn more about the full prep program here: MedBridge CHT Prep Program.

1. Wound Debridement and Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy

This segment will cover all facets of wound debridement and why it is necessary to remove necrotic tissue from the wound bed to promote closure. Many types of debridement exist, and often more than one is used by practitioners, based on individual patient factors, to optimize wound healing. This chapter will also cover primary indications and applications of negative-pressure wound therapy in complex wound healing.

2. Types of Wound Dressings

Many options exist for wound dressings and coverage. This segment will review each category of wound dressings, including indications and contraindications for use, to familiarize the therapist with the many options that are available to promote healing and closure.

3. Wound Coverage Selection

Now that practitioners are armed with knowledge of the many options for wound coverage, this segment covers a systematic approach to wound dressing selection based on wound characteristics and individual patient factors. This will help the practitioner problem-solve through scenarios and challenges to determine the best possible options for wound care and coverage and then make changes as closure occurs and healing progresses.
