Bill has been a respiratory therapist for more than 20 years, currently working at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Bill received his respiratory therapy education at Saint Paul College and went on to receive his bachelor's and master's degrees from Concordia University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He is has served as the vice president of the Minnesota Society for Respiratory Care and the chair of the Clinicians Advisory Committee for the American Thoracic Society. Bill's educational experience includes 10 years as a clinical instructor at Saint Paul College and 7 years as the associate program director of the Mayo Clinic Respiratory Therapy Program, as well as a clinical specialist in education in the Respiratory Therapy Department at the Mayo Clinic.

Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation: Epidemiology and Technical Elements
This course will explore common disease states that healthcare providers may encounter that lead to patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation. The course will discuss how these disease processes may involve a variety of approaches to successful mechanical ventilation management. This course will also discuss planning an approach to ventilator weaning and liberation of the prolonged mechanical ventilation patient when appropriate. The goal of this course is to prepare guidance for multidisciplinary, team-based care of patients with long-term mechanical ventilation.

Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation: Tracheostomy and Advanced Practice
This course helps to address some of the educational needs and technical requirements for patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation. It does so by focusing on the understanding of airway management and the technical aspects of home ventilator equipment. Patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation require intense resources coordinated amongst an often-fragmented healthcare system; this course highlights the importance of nuanced, team-based care that is tailored to the patient's individual needs. Developing a basic understanding of tracheostomy and airway management as they relate to care of the patient with prolonged mechanical ventilation is key to the long-term success of prolonged mechanical ventilation patients. This course will analyze common clinical challenges and respiratory emergencies in patients with chronic ventilator dependence using case-based discussions.
