Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Special Older Population ADLs: Mental Health, Amputation, and COVID-19 (Recorded Webinar)
Older adults in special populations face age-related comorbidities, social circumstances, and contexts that make evaluation and treatment unique. Specifically, older adults with acute or chronic conditions such as amputation, mental health disorders, or COVID-19 have special needs that require highlighting for professionals working in rehabilitation, including OTs, PTs, SLPs, and nurses. Surveys indicate that clinicians feel uncomfortable with these populations due to lack of education and experience. To assist, we will identify best practice for evaluation and treatment of older adults in these special populations across inpatient and outpatient treatment settings, as well as in restricted environments. Clinicians will be able to formulate treatment plans based on evidence and practical clinical strategies determined by treatment context.
A Clinical Guide to Enhance Learning in People with Alzheimer’s Disease (PwAD) (Recorded Webinar)
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
A Clinical Guide to Enhance Learning in People with Alzheimer’s Disease (PwAD) (Recorded Webinar)
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from standard MedBridge courses. Have you struggled to teach people with Alzheimer's disease (PwAD) new or old tasks pertinent to their health care? In this class, we unfold the mystery of how to teach PwAD activities important for their quality of life and safety. By understanding their brain strengths at each stage, you can successfully choose the right training paradigms, interventions, and recall supports across home, inpatient, and outpatient settings.
Activities of Daily Living Bootcamp: Grooming
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Activities of Daily Living Bootcamp: Grooming
Our need to engage in grooming is highly individualistic and contributes to individual self-identity and societal persona. People with acquired deficits in physical, cognitive, and visual skills can lose independence in grooming. In this course, you will learn how deficits influence grooming performance and consider how habit adaptations, environmental modifications, and interventions for person variables can maximize those outcomes.
Introduction to Activities of Daily Living: Contemporary Topics
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Introduction to Activities of Daily Living: Contemporary Topics
Independent performance or self-direction in everyday life tasks such as, activities of daily living (ADL), is critical to living in the community. However, research shows that health care professionals can improve their approach and give more attention to what is meaningful to clients and families. In this course, we explore contemporary issues that influence ADL such as, the personal meaning of ADL, cultural influences and the benefits of autonomy on general mental and physical health. This course is created for health care providers in both medical and community-based settings.
Activities of Daily Living Bootcamp: Toileting and Bathing
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Activities of Daily Living Bootcamp: Toileting and Bathing
All people engage in some level of bathing and toileting, yet it can be highly variable in habits and routines across culture and gender. People with acquired deficits in physical, cognitive, and visual skills can lose independence in bathing and toileting. In this course, you will learn how deficits influence bathing and toileting performance, and consider how habit adaptations, environmental modifications, and interventions for person variables can maximize outcomes.
Activities of Daily Living Bootcamp: Dressing
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Activities of Daily Living Bootcamp: Dressing
The clothes we choose is highly individualistic and contributes to individual style and self-identity, as well as societal persona. People with acquired deficits in physical, cognitive, and visual skills can lose independence in dressing. In this course, you will learn how deficits influence dressing performance and consider how habit adaptations, environmental modifications, and interventions for person variables can maximize outcomes.
Activities of Daily Living Boot Camp: Eating and Drinking
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Activities of Daily Living Boot Camp: Eating and Drinking
Eating and drinking are essential for living and for many patients and families, the continued ability to eat and drink contribute to a meaningful quality of life. People with acquired deficits in physical, cognitive, and visual skills can lose independence in eating and drinking. In this course, you will learn how deficits influence grooming performance and consider how habit adaptations, environmental modifications, and interventions for person variables can maximize outcomes.
Dementia: Therapist's Guide to Behavioral Management
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dementia: Therapist's Guide to Behavioral Management
In this course, the participant will receive a broad overview of behavior, a rationale for structuring treatment to avoid negative behaviors and a review of the evidence related to emerging behavioral management therapies. Dr. Carrie Ciro introduces Sensory Processing Theory as a way of interpreting and supporting daily behaviors. Dr. Ciro discusses the impact of meaningful routines as preventative to negative behaviors and provides structure for how to create routines. A variety of popular behavioral management techniques such as Snoezelen, massage, music, aromatherapy and environmental modifications are defined with best practice use recommended.
Dementia: Improving Activities of Living
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dementia: Improving Activities of Living
In this course, the participant will receive a broad overview of the activities of daily living (ADLs) that dementia patients excel at, while addressing common errors they may make as a function of the severity of their dementia. Assessment of ADLs, with a focus on meaningful goals, will be introduced as a motivator for therapy and an enhancer of recovery. This course outlines a step-by-step task-oriented training using a motor learning framework and includes opportunities to develop meaningful treatment plans.
Dementia: Improving Physical Performance and Functional Mobility
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dementia: Improving Physical Performance and Functional Mobility
In this course, Dr. Carrie Ciro focuses on four areas that impact physical performance in people with dementia. First, she discusses specific gait changes and evidence-based intervention for improving dementia-specific deficits. Second, she explores how pain impacts mobility and best practice management for assessing and managing pain. Third, she demonstrates assessment and activity plans that focus on meaningful movements needed to improve quality of life. Finally, the participant will consider evidence-based recommendations for fall risk.
Dementia and Capacity for Learning in Rehabilitation Sciences
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dementia and Capacity for Learning in Rehabilitation Sciences
In this course, the participant will receive an overview of dementia. Dr. Carrie Ciro provides information distinguishing differential diagnoses and testing to confirm dementia. The clinical presentation, prognosis and course of various forms of dementia are also reviewed. Neuroplasticity is defined and the potential for functional improvement via rehabilitation intervention is introduced. Finally, the course highlights the evidence between cognitive training and task-oriented training in improving function in daily life skills.
Dementia: Using Assistive Technology to Improve Functional Performance
Presented by Carrie Ciro, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dementia: Using Assistive Technology to Improve Functional Performance
In this course, participants will be introduced to different types of technology or environmental modifications that support function in people with dementia. As many older adults suffer from issues related to vision, Dr. Carrie Ciro outlines the most common low vision diagnoses, presentation and supports for improving function. In a section focused on activities of daily living, participants will explore a variety of low and high tech options that can be incorporated into task-oriented training. Specific to memory support, a variety of stationary and mobile devices to support function are highlighted. Finally, Dr. Ciro provides a framework for training people with dementia how to use assistive technology within a task-oriented program using motor learning structure.
