She evaluates, treats, and advocates for individuals hospitalized for various medical and traumatic-related injuries, alongside the interprofessional team, beginning in the intensive care unit.
Kristen's area of expertise is moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation, with special interest in disorders of consciousness (DoC). Her scholarly concentration includes evidence-based practice, knowledge translation, implementation science, and process and quality improvement. As part of her postprofessional OTD, she developed an innovative evidence-based care model to improve interprofessional care for individuals with DoC in the hospital setting. Her work has been published and shared at various national and international conferences. Beyond her role in healthcare and scholarship, she is the sole occupational therapist on the State of Hawaii Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Board focused on dynamic educational efforts, development of community resources, and advocacy for survivors of TBI.

Presented by Jessica Asiello, OTD, OTR/L and Kristen Keech, OTD, OTR/L, CBIS
Disorders of Consciousness: Intervention Best Practices
In this course, discover the best evidence-based treatment in disorders of consciousness, and translate treatment results with clear and accurate language to improve documentation, goal writing, interprofessional collaboration, and patient and caregiver education. This course is applicable for all members of the interprofessional team, especially nursing and allied health professionals, across the continuum of acute and post-acute care settings.
Learning Objectives
- Apply knowledge of evidence-based treatment recommendations to facilitate recovery of consciousness and improve advocacy efforts for persons with disorders of consciousness (DoC)
- Examine evidence-based treatment options for individuals with DoC
- Determine key components of caregiver education/training
- Implement at least two strategies for documentation and goal writing
- Analyze how accurate documentation can result in increased advocacy and access to rehabilitation
Disorders of Consciousness: Assessment Best Practices
Presented by Jessica Asiello, OTD, OTR/L and Kristen Keech, OTD, OTR/L, CBIS
Disorders of Consciousness: Assessment Best Practices
Despite the availability of interprofessional practice guidelines emphasizing the importance of serial neurobehavioral assessment in disorders of consciousness (DoC), current implementation in practice is limited and lacks consistency. As a result, people with DoC may be misdiagnosed or given overly pessimistic prognoses for functional recovery that can result in misinformed caregiver decisions around goals of care and missed opportunities for post-acute rehabilitation. In this course, discover the best evidence-based practices for serial neurobehavioral assessment in DoC, and translate assessment results with clear and accurate language to improve documentation, interprofessional collaboration, and patient and caregiver education. This course is applicable for all members of the interprofessional team, especially nursing and allied health professionals, across the continuum of acute and post-acute care settings.
Learning Objectives
- Examine why serial neurobehavioral assessment by the interprofessional team is the best-practice, evidence-based guideline for evaluation of people with disorders of consciousness (DoC)
- Determine at least three techniques used to facilitate arousal prior to beginning neurobehavioral examination
- Analyze the pros and cons of at least three specific evidence-based tools and protocols for serial neurobehavioral assessment
- Plan how to accurately document environmental and manual techniques used during assessment and patient responses
- Implement best practices for translating patient responses on assessments into clear and accurate communications with interprofessional team members, patients, and caregivers
Disorders of Consciousness: What Interprofessional Teams Need to Know (Recorded Webinar)

Disorders of Consciousness: What Interprofessional Teams Need to Know (Recorded Webinar)
Physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and nurses play a pivotal role in the recovery and treatment of individuals with disorders of consciousness (DoC). Join us for this dynamic webinar, which will introduce current evidence and provide practitioners with an overview of neurological injury resulting in DoC. During this webinar, we will highlight the stages and prevalence/incidence of DoC and provide an overview of the 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines for DoC developed by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN); the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM); and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). We will also discuss medical ethics related to DoC, including statistics on misdiagnosis and ethical implications as well as critical considerations within the first week of a DoC diagnosis that practitioners can directly apply to their current practice. The webinar will conclude with information on upcoming resources focused on translating evidence to clinical assessment and treatment of this complex, marginalized population.
