Perry Flynn

Perry Flynn is Vice-President for Planning for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. He is the Consultant to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in the area of Speech-Language Pathology and a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has several publications in the ASHA Leader, Perspectives and Language Speech and Hearing Services in Schools on the topics of the Common Core State Standards, and service delivery in public schools. He is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) Certified Riding Instructor, an Operation Smile volunteer and a member of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics North Carolina.

Navigating the Requirements of Special Education Eligibility
School-based speech-language pathologists are often confronted with challenges in determining if a particular child is eligible for special education services for a speech-language impairment. This course will build on Kathleen Whitmire's Educationally Relevant Speech-Language Services in Schools (available on MedBridge), with a brief review of special education and related services eligibility requirements. The course will provide in-depth discussion of assessment approaches that facilitate eligibility team deliberations. A variety of case studies reflecting common dilemmas school-based SLPs face will be used to highlight best practices in assessment, collaboration, and decision-making.

Educational Standards: Practical Applications for Student Success
How do school-based SLPs tie their services to the state educational standards? This course will acquaint SLPs to educational standards and help them tie their services to what is educationally relevant for students. A variety of service delivery models will be discussed, and participants will be encouraged to collaborate with teachers to provide educationally relevant services in the least restrictive environment. Participants will use case studies to select relevant standards, goals, and service delivery options using math and English language arts educational standards.

Social Language Skills for All Students
Many SLPs struggle to teach social language/pragmatic skills for a variety of students, some of whom meet special education eligibility requirements. This course highlights social language skills from an educationally relevant / school curriculum perspective and discusses the SLP's role with all students in regular and special education. Many social language functions are described, and several case studies are presented. Participants will identify inappropriate social language and prioritize goals and service delivery models for the case studies provided.
