Ruth Stoeckel, PhD, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and specializes in the assessment and intervention of children with apraxia of speech. With 30 years of experience, Dr. Stoeckel has delivered services to children in schools, outpatient clinics, and rehabilitation hospital settings. She is often asked to render 2nd opinions on CAS diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment progress. Dr. Stoeckel has presented lectures, workshops and advanced training on Childhood Apraxia of Speech on an international level, including the United States, Canada, and Australia. Additionally, Dr. Stoeckel has authored and delivered numerous web-based courses focused on CAS. She has co-authored articles on CAS assessment and treatment in numerous peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Stoeckel is a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America.

This course, with Ruth Stoeckel, provides theoretical background and instruction in evidence-based therapy for school-aged children with apraxia of speech. The course begins by connecting research to practice, and reviewing the evidence behind approaches to treating childhood apraxia of speech. Next, Dr. Stoeckel explains the importance of strategic target selection for maximizing outcomes with this population, and reviews key considerations for target selection. Special attention is paid to issues for school-aged children, including risks for co-occurring problems in this population. The course concludes with a question and answer session to further explore challenges with apraxia of speech treatment in this population.

What is the relationship between literacy and speech or language disorders? How can improving reading skills during intervention for childhood apraxia of speech improve overall outcomes? In this course, Dr. Ruth Stoeckel explores these important questions, and the evidence linking speech-language problems and literacy. The course begins by providing a rationale for proactive intervention with respect to literacy and childhood apraxia of speech, as well as specific instructions on strategies and activities that can be used to integrate literacy training in therapy. The course concludes with a Q&A session with a practicing SLP to further discuss issues around childhood apraxia of speech, clinical interventions, and literacy.
