Presented by Shelley Bhola RN-BC, BSN, MSN, PHN
The Role of the Infection Preventionist in Long-Term Care
The role of the Infection Preventionist (IP) in the long-term care setting is not yet defined. However, what has been defined needs to be included in an active infection prevention program. Understanding what facilities must do to comply with F880 will underscore the importance this position will have as part of the interdisciplinary team. As long-term care moves forward in the area of infection prevention, the industry will need the support of a qualified, knowledgeable advocate to bring infection prevention to life.
Creating an Antibiotic Stewardship Program
Presented by Shelley Bhola RN-BC, BSN, MSN, PHN
Creating an Antibiotic Stewardship Program
Antibiotic stewardship, according to the CDC, refers to a set of commitments and actions designed to optimize the treatment of infections while reducing the adverse events associated with antibiotic use. Between 1.5 and 1.7 million older adults live in long-term care facilities annually, with an average of 1.6 to 3.8 million infections treated annually (APIC, 2013). While antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed medications in long-term care, studies have shown that 40 to 75% of those prescribed are unnecessary or inappropriate. This course will provide the history of antibiotics, the development of the multiple drug-resistant organisms, and the urgent need to create a sustainable antibiotic stewardship program that will preserve their use for future generations.
Sepsis: Early Recognition to Avoid Hospitalization
Presented by Shelley Bhola RN-BC, BSN, MSN, PHN
Sepsis: Early Recognition to Avoid Hospitalization
Preventing rehospitalizations has been a priority for hospitals since 2012. Partnering with long-term care facilities that can help them achieve this goal is vital. Infections are one of the leading causes of hospitalization. The CDC estimates that 80% of those with sepsis develop sepsis outside of the hospital setting. Therefore, the rapid recognition and treatment of sepsis is essential. This course will guide the long-term care nurse in early recognition, proper communication to the physician, and interventions available in the long-term care setting that will help avoid a hospitalization.
