Challenges of Community Reintegration Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Presented by Steven Wheeler, PhD, OTR/L, CBIS

Challenges of Community Reintegration Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.

This course provides an overview of executive cognitive functions and presents assessment approaches designed to assess performance deficits as they pertain to community reintegration. As "control" functions, executive cognitive functions enable people to engage in controlled behavior beyond that based on impulse alone. Deficits in executive functioning are common after moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and greatly hinder one's ability to resume adult social, vocational, family, and leisure roles. Through understanding these important elements of cognitive performance, rehabilitation professionals can conduct competent evaluations of an individual's community reintegration following TBI.

Traumatic Brain Injury: Treatment Strategies to Facilitate Community Participation

Presented by Steven Wheeler, PhD, OTR/L, CBIS

Traumatic Brain Injury: Treatment Strategies to Facilitate Community Participation

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.

This course outlines key aspects of the therapy process during rehabilitation of executive cognitive functions following TBI. While established protocols and approaches to treating many components are outlined in the literature, these are best accomplished when in the context of a therapeutic relationship and client-centered program. Participants of this course will learn ways to establish this context within individual and group interventions to maximize functional outcomes and the transition from the hospital setting to the home and community.
This is the second course in a two-part series by Dr. Wheeler. The first course, Challenges of Community Reintegration Following Traumatic Brain Injury should be viewed first.
