This course will provide nurses in rehabilitation settings with an evidenced-based overview of enteral nutrition support. It will address benefits, routes for access devices, feeding methods, and enteral formulas. Complications, interventions, and long-term considerations related to maintenance of feeding tubes will also be discussed. This course is appropriate for nurses working in post-acute care settings.

1. Evidence-Based Overview of Benefits and Routes of Enteral Nutrition

This chapter will cover the benefits of enteral nutrition when the patient/resident will not, should not, or cannot or take nutrition orally. All five routes (nasogastric, gastric-PEG, nasoduodenal, nasojejunal, and jejunal-PEJ), including the indications, advantages, and disadvantages will be discussed.

2. Complications in Enteral Nutrition and Tube Feedings

This chapter will cover the gastrointestinal, mechanical, and metabolic complications of enteral nutrition. Many complications can be prevented by the right formula selections, proper administration, and ongoing monitoring. The problems associated with these complications will be explored, along with the causes and interventions to reduce and/or eliminate them.

3. Patient/Caregiver Education of Enteral Nutrition and Tube Feeding Management

This chapter will illustrates a patient /resident/caregiver education program on enteral nutrition, including care and maintenance of a G-tube or PEG tube. A simulated presentation will demonstrate how to administer enteral feedings and medications.
