Individuals who have had a stroke commonly have upper extremity involvement. Many times, the presentation of a hemiplegic shoulder can directly impact a person's function. It is critical to have multiple intervention strategies to incorporate based on presentation. This course will address the critical aspect of providing a comprehensive intervention for a person with a hemiplegic shoulder.

J.J. Mowder-Tinney received her BS in psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder and her MS in physical therapy from the University of Miami in Florida. 1. Evidence-Based Interventions: General Overview

This chapter reviews a variety of evidence-based websites and references to provide a variety of treatment options. This will include a discussion of ways to overlap some of these options while performing task-specific activities to facilitate outcomes.

2. Priming the Upper Extremity Through Passive Range of Motion

This chapter will provide a number of video demonstrations for performing PROM of the upper extremity. Considerations for people with lower tone and higher tone will be discussed.

3. Interventions for Lower Tone Utilizing Open- and Closed-Chain Positions

This chapter will include multiple demonstrations to assist in improving alignment of the scapula and proper positioning of the arm in standing. While focusing on increasing input and activation examples will be given to progress a session for someone with upper extremity involvement.
