SCI Part 2: Early Rehabilitation Considerations
Identifying optimal intervention strategies for patients with spinal cord injury can be very challenging for clinicians. Some of the most concerning and frustrating aspects can be when patients are limited by respiratory complications, decreased sitting tolerance, skin issues, and range-of-motion deficits. In addition, limitations seen with shoulder pain can have significant impact on the functional abilities of these patients. These restrictions can be seen early on in acute care and for many years post injury. Having specific strategies to address these challenges is a priority. In this course, J.J. Mowder-Tinney guides clinicians through a practical approach to the above issues for individuals recovering from spinal cord injury. This course involves demonstrations with real patients who have cervical- and thoracic-level injuries to illustrate interventions that will optimize the independence of patients. This course is appropriate for PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and nursing, and can be utilized in any patient setting.

Reactive Balance: Translating Research Into Clinical Practice (Recorded Webinar)
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from standard MedBridge courses.
Older adults and individuals with neurologic conditions are at an increased fall risk. The ability to produce quick reactive stepping is a critical component to decrease this risk and improve function. Perturbation-based balance training (PBBT) is an innovative intervention design with a goal of improving control of the needed rapid balance reaction. An abundance of PBBT research has been performed with a variety of patient populations, including stroke and spinal cord injury, as well as aging adults. However, the research design of these studies is often impractical for the everyday clinician and doesn't address the preliminary building blocks for varying levels of patients in different settings. In this course, the speaker will review the necessary components to progress different patient diagnoses/settings to effectively perform PBBT. Through lecture and video-based cases, this session will focus on translating the evidence to successfully implement a progression of PBBT-type interventions for the above patient diagnoses. The presenter will emphasize key evidence-based concepts along with practical solutions to execute PBBT interventions. The purpose of this course is for participants to leave with practical and evidence-based insights to safely and effectively apply PBBT with patients when returning to their clinic.

Motor Learning Strategies: Principles for Application
It is an exciting time in rehabilitation. The expansion in the literature regarding the benefits of incorporating motor learning into any type of intervention is undeniable. The latest evidence has shown profound implications for rehabilitation and recovery providing new insights into the optimization of skill learning. This course series takes these beneficial theories and turn them into practical and easy to use approaches for therapists to use in the clinic on Monday. Currently, the principles of motor learning are commonly found as definitions in textbooks that lack explicit utilization into clinical practice. However, the research on attaining a new motor skill is extensive and requires the inclusion of adjustments in feedback, incorporation of variability, problem solving, motivation and attention while addressing intensity. It is a critical time to disseminate this beneficial information into everyday practice. This module is designed to provide specific strategies, no matter the patient diagnosis, that can immediately be incorporated into any treatment session being performed. In addition, the course provides examples of how to adjust your practice to make the motor learning process the most effective, resulting in better outcomes.
