Management of bowel and bladder is a major nursing task in rehabilitation. The rehabilitation nurse should recognize the types of neurogenic bowel and bladder function often seen in stroke, spinal injury, brain injury, and various neurological disorders. These types will be discussed along with nursing interventions to promote self-care and normalcy.

1. Management of Bladder Elimination

This chapter presents normal micturition patterns and several major types of neurogenic bladder function commonly seen in rehabilitation. Strategies to recall symptoms of and interventions for each type of bladder function are discussed.

2. Management of Bowel Elimination

This chapter focuses on management of bowel elimination, including three major types of neurogenic bowel function. Strategies, both pharmacological and nonpharmacological, to prevent constipation and fecal incontinence are discussed.
