This course features three live patient demonstrations focusing on the assessment and facilitation of CoreFirst(R) postural and movement strategies and the impact of mechanical capacity on neuromuscular function. Vicky Saliba Johnson demonstrates specific manual techniques for assessing end feel, neuromuscular activation, and automatic core engagement. Gregory S. Johnson demonstrates treatment of mechanical limitations in the lumbar spine to improve alignment and neuromuscular function.

This course is part of a six-part series with Gregg and Vicky Johnson, which is designed to provide the participant with a working understanding of the FMT system of patient care through live patient demonstrations and lectures to support the clinical reasoning behind the progression of treatment and skills used:

  • Functional Manual Therapy(R): A Comprehensive Patient Management System.
  • Understanding the Interconnectivity of the Body's Connective Tissues and Articulations and Their Interdependency for Efficient Function - Live patient assessment and treatment and mechanical components of neck and low back pain by Gregory S. Johnson.
  • Neuromuscular Function: Mastering the Specificity of Manual Neuromuscular Facilitation - Live patient demonstrations for the assessment and facilitation of CoreFirst(R) postural and movement strategies and the integrated use of specific manual neuromuscular facilitation to address ROM, Initiation, and strength by Vicky Saliba Johnson and Gregory Johnson.
  • Motor Control: Principles of CoreFirst(R) Strategies for Posture and Movement - Live patient demonstration utilizing CoreFirst(R) strategies for posture and movement to promote an Automatic Core Engagement (ACE) by Vicky Saliba Johnson.
  • The Functional Manual Therapy(R) Approach to the Knee - Live patient assessment and treatment of a knee patient by Gregory S. Johnson.
  • The Functional Manual Therapy(R) Approach to the Pelvic Girdle - Live patient assessment and treatment of a low back patient by Gregory S. Johnson.

1. Case Study One

Christina, an active female rock climber with chronic LBP and reported core weakness. This patient presents with chronic low back pain and “weakness in her core…” despite regular core work outs in classes and at the gym. The demonstration, by Vicky Saliba and Gregory S. Jonnson, includes use of the IPA Functional Tests, a mechanical treatment, manual assessment of neuromuscular function, and demonstration of Tonic Spread® technique for facilitating an automatic core engagement.

2. Case Study Two

Kristin, an active female who injured her back at the gym and has never felt she could fire her core since the injury. This demonstration, by Vicky Saliba Johnson, focuses on the assessment of her core to provide functional stability, identification of an inefficient neuromuscular function, and use of Manual Neuromuscular Facilitation to activate appropriate initiation and strength.

3. Case Study Three

Jason, an active male who suffers from chronic neck pain secondary to a cervical herniated disk and discectomy. This demonstration, provided by Vicky Saliba Johnson, focuses on the manual assessment of the ROM, end feel, and neuromuscular function of the cervico-scapula region. The progression includes rationale for use of certain manual facilitation techniques as well as use of Combination of Isotonics to increase ROM and restore motor control at end range.
