Orthopedic surgery is a common intervention for children with cerebral palsy. Often times the goal of the surgical intervention is to improve or prolong a child's ability to ambulate. This course will discuss current trends in the orthopedic management of ambulatory children with cerebral palsy including single-event multilevel surgery and post-intervention outcomes. The course will also provide a framework for the gait assessment and clinical assessments that are critical for the pre-surgical decision making process.

This chapter discusses the etiology of cerebral palsy as well as the classification systems that are used for children with cerebral palsy. Common impairments in posture and movement will be discussed.

This chapter describes common gait patterns in children with cerebral palsy. The natural history of ambulation in cerebral palsy will also be explored.

3. The Critical Components of Assessment for Ambulatory Children with Cerebral Palsy

This chapter considers the components of a holistic examination of a child with cerebral palsy, including gait analysis and musculoskeletal and neuromuscular assessment. Examination techniques will be demonstrated.

4. Intervention for the Ambulatory Child with Cerebral Palsy

This chapter discusses spasticity management, physical therapy, and orthopedic interventions for children with cerebral palsy who are ambulatory. Recent and relevant scientific literature will be surveyed.

5. Teamwork, Participation, and Lifespan Considerations

This final chapter emphasizes the less technical but potentially the most important components and considerations to optimize gait for children with cerebral palsy, including teamwork and a focus on participation throughout the lifespan.
