The overuse of oxygen in healthcare settings has been shown to be harmful. Despite this evidence, many clinicians believe that oxygen is harmless. It is important that healthcare settings have a process in place to guide caregivers in the titration of oxygen to continually maintain safe oxygen levels while meeting patient needs.

This course will create an awareness of the dangers of liberal oxygen therapy practices. Steps in development and implementation of a protocol will be presented and the importance of clear titration guidelines discussed. The intended audience is respiratory care professionals and leaders of healthcare staff who administer oxygen.

1. Oxygen Use and Oxygen Toxicity

This chapter will assess knowledge regarding best-practice recommendations and the risks of liberal oxygen use. The recent evidence that describes the risks of liberal oxygen therapy will be reviewed.

2. Best-Practice Oxygen Recommendations

This chapter provides evidence-based practice recommendations regarding oxygen saturation ranges and discusses the importance of not delaying oxygen titration.

3. Developing an Evidence-Based Oxygen Protocol

Current recommendations from the American Association of Respiratory Care are provided. Examples of evidence-based oxygen protocols with traditional devices and with open-design oxygen masks will be presented. In addition, indications and contraindications for oxygen therapy will be reviewed.

4. Changing the Culture

This chapter utilizes scenarios to demonstrate how and when feedback and education regarding the appropriate use of oxygen should occur in a clinical setting.
