This course gives an overview of common types of grief and how they present. Jody provides guidance on how to talk to children and parents about the dying process and death. Many young adult parents have never experienced the death of a loved one. This course provides helpful guidance to the clinician providing care and explains how to plan in advance and find resources to assist the family. Jody speaks with mothers about their grieving process. This course also provides a reminder to the clinician that in palliative care we often cannot fix things, but we can provide comfort by offering appropriate individualized support and compassion.

This chapter discusses common categories of grief and examples of how they might present. This is helpful for the clinician in understanding what intentions may be needed to provide the best grief support for the individual and family.

This chapter discusses common work that individuals do as they go through the grieving process. It also reviews some factors that can influence the grieving process. Finally, Jody speaks to a mother who shares her grief experience after the death of her son.

3. When It Feels Like Nothing Helps

This chapter discusses strategies that can help families, and some helpful tips for providing support to them. Clinicians can do some advanced planning to be able to identify resources for the family. Suggestions of resources are provided in the chapter and bibliography.
