This chapter provides a review of the pain experience, how pain and nociception differ, and what influences the pain experience in the human body.

This chapter provides an overview of the science behind the bidirectional relationship between sleep and pain.
3. The Relationship Between Opioids and Sleep
This chapter provides an overview of the adverse relationship between opioids (given to manage pain) and sleep (which, when disordered, can adversely influence pain).
4. What Is a Holistic Approach and Its Relationship to Sleep and Pain?
This chapter provides an overview of the current sleep surveys/questionnaires that can be used to screen patients for sleep disorders. It includes psychometric properties as well as practical action to be taken based on individual results.
