MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS
Jaimie Anderson is a medical speech-language pathologist (SLP) and is board certified by the Academy of Neurogenic Communication Disorders (BC-ANCDS). She currently evaluates and treats complex multiphase swallowing, voice, upper airway, and motor speech disorders as part of a multidisciplinary team at the University of South Florida Joy McCann Culverhouse Center for Swallowing Disorders in Tampa, Florida. She is also an adjunct clinical instructor for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at USF.
Jaimie has 10 years of experience across medical settings. She earned a bachelor of science in 2011 and master of science in 2013 in communication science and disorders at Florida State University. She completed her clinical fellowship year and worked 6 years at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She specialized in the functional rehabilitation of speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders in oncology patients, specifically those with brain tumors. She was an integral team member for the intraoperative language mapping program for patients undergoing awake craniotomy with neurosurgery and neuropsychology. In 2019, she returned to Florida, where she worked with patients with a variety of medical conditions in acute and outpatient settings at Cleveland Clinic Florida and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida.
Jaimie is the first author on two book chapters outlining rehabilitation of speech and swallowing in patients with skull-based tumors. She is certified in Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP), and the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP). She has been an invited speaker at several regional and national conferences. She serves on the professional development committee with ASHA's Special Interest Group 2, Neurogenic Communication Disorders; the Board Certification Committee for the ANCDS; and the Website, Communications, and Public Relations Committee for the Dysphagia Research Society.

Presented by Jaimie Anderson, MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS
Comprehensive Assessment of Functional Dysphagia
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate oropharyngeal dysphagia secondary to structural and neurologic etiologies. This includes swallowing deficits following stroke, traumatic brain injury, progressive neurogenic disease, and head and neck cancer. There is a proliferation of literature describing the typical clinical swallowing presentation in these organic disorders and how to evaluate and treat them. However, sometimes patients present with significant swallowing complaints without an identifiable organic cause. This presentation will equip the practitioner with information to identify patients with functional dysphagia. The DSM-5 criteria for functional neurologic disorders and Rome Foundation criteria for functional dysphagia will be reviewed. A modern understanding of risk factors, including gut-brain interaction, cortical changes, and a biopsychosocial model will be discussed. A multidisciplinary approach for exclusion of other diagnoses will be described, such as neurodegenerative disease, esophageal dysmotility, or structural abnormalities of the head and neck. A comprehensive evaluation of functional dysphagia, including a thorough case history, patient interview, multiphase swallowing examination, and patient-reported outcomes to identify inclusionary criteria, will be presented.
Multidisciplinary Treatment of Functional Dysphagia and Its Subsets
Presented by Jaimie Anderson, MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS
Multidisciplinary Treatment of Functional Dysphagia and Its Subsets
This course will assess the subsets of functional dysphagia and which should be considered, as these may modify the practitioner's approach. This includes phagophobia, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, and muscle tension dysphagia. Historical and modern perspectives of treatment for functional neurological disorders and functional dysphagia will be reviewed. Multidisciplinary approaches will be examined. This includes medication, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulus, and esophageal dilations. The role of a mental health psychologist will be highlighted, including psychoeducation, arousal modification, cognitive behavioral therapy, and hypnotherapy.
SLP Treatment for Functional Dysphagia
Presented by Jaimie Anderson, MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS
SLP Treatment for Functional Dysphagia
Treatment of functional dysphagia by an SLP can be successful and rewarding. With our support and guidance, patients can often improve their symptoms, return to a regular diet, eliminate abnormal swallowing behaviors, and enjoy eating with friends and family again. This course will review specific therapeutic techniques used by an SLP to manage patients with functional dysphagia. This includes how to educate and counsel patients regarding their new diagnosis and possible risk factors. Relaxation and muscle tension reducing techniques will be highlighted. Finally, swallow strategy training using a food hierarchy with biofeedback will be demonstrated.
