Jennifer Raminick
MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S
Jen Raminick graduated from California State University, Long Beach, and has been a speech-language pathologist at a pediatric acute care hospital for more than eight years. She has earned her board-certified specialist accreditation in swallowing and has multiple leadership roles in the hospital, including chair of the clinical practice committee to guide patient care. She has mentored graduate students and fellow therapists, with an emphasis on modified barium swallow studies (MBSS) and acute inpatient competency. She has led a committee to implement the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI), providing guidance and education to multiple departments throughout the hospital. She has also worked on a team to write a grant for fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) equipment and is working to develop a comprehensive FEES program. She has been both a national and regional speaker, presenting at the California and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's annual conventions, covering topics such as feeding on high-flow nasal cannula and implementing the IDDSI framework.

Presented by Hema Desai, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLEC, NTMTC and Jennifer Raminick, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S
Pediatric Respiratory System Development and Aspiration
This course aims to fill the knowledge gaps in pediatric dysphagia coursework by delving into the intricate relationship between pediatric lung development, anatomy and physiology of the pediatric respiratory system, and airway protective mechanisms in the context of dysphagia and aspiration. Clinicians will study the anatomical and physiological aspects of the pediatric airway, the respiratory system, and the developmental changes that occur from infancy to childhood. Clinicians taking this course will acquire a comprehensive understanding of how these factors relate to dysphagia and aspiration in pediatric patients. The goal is for clinicians to be well-prepared to assess and address the specific challenges faced by children and infants with dysphagia.
Learning Objectives
- Identify three primary anatomical structures, musculature, and reflexes involved in respiration and airway protection in children
- Define three risk factors for aspiration in children
- Highlight two events leading to lung damage in children who are aspirating
- Recognize three factors to consider during dysphagia evaluations for children at risk for aspiration
- Recognize three consequences of aspiration when making feeding recommendations for children with dysphagia
Pediatric Dysphagia With Advanced Respiratory Support and Tracheostomies
Presented by Hema Desai, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLEC, NTMTC and Jennifer Raminick, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S
Pediatric Dysphagia With Advanced Respiratory Support and Tracheostomies
This course is designed to equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize the indications for advanced respiratory support in children, evaluate the impact of different respiratory interventions on breathing and dysphagia risk, and manage dysphagia effectively in pediatric patients with tracheostomies, ventilators, and advanced respiratory support. By the end of this course, participants will be well prepared to provide holistic care to children with complex respiratory needs, enhancing their overall well-being.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize three indications for advanced respiratory support in children
- Identify three forms of noninvasive respiratory support and impact on breathing in children
- Examine how ventilator support impacts the respiratory system and musculature
- List three indications for a tracheostomy in children
- Describe three risks for dysphagia due to tracheostomy placement
- List three components of a dysphagia evaluation for children with tracheostomy
- Identify three ways that a speaking valve may improve swallow function
Pediatric Respiratory Disorders and Impact on Swallowing
Presented by Hema Desai, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLEC, NTMTC and Jennifer Raminick, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S
Pediatric Respiratory Disorders and Impact on Swallowing
This course is a comprehensive review of the intricate relationship between pediatric respiratory disorders and their direct impact on swallowing function in infants and children. As healthcare professionals, understanding this complex interplay is essential for delivering holistic care to the youngest members of our patient population.
Learning Objectives
- Define three key features and characteristics of pediatric respiratory disorders that contribute to feeding/eating/swallowing difficulties
- Determine the synchronous relationship between bronchopulmonary dysplasia, dysphagia, and management strategies
- Examine the synchronous relationship between brief resolved unexplained events (BRUEs), dysphagia, and management strategies
- Identify the synchronous relationship between acute respiratory illness, dysphagia, and management strategies
- Distinguish the synchronous relationship between pediatric airway disorders, dysphagia, and management strategies
- Analyze the synchronous relationship between extubation, dysphagia, and management strategies
Exploring and Implementing IDDSI for Pediatrics
Presented by Jennifer Raminick, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S and Danielle M. Ward, MA, CCC-SLP
Exploring and Implementing IDDSI for Pediatrics
The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) has been endorsed by multiple governing bodies as best practice in texture modification for dysphagia. This course will provide an in-depth look at the steps to implementation, key stakeholders, and how to navigate the transition in an acute care pediatric hospital setting. Food preparation and recipe testing for menu research and development as well as pediatric IDDSI compliance will be reviewed. Target audiences include speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, nurses, and registered dietitians. This course is applicable to inpatient and outpatient hospital settings.
Applying IDDSI to Pediatrics

Applying IDDSI to Pediatrics
The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) has been endorsed by multiple governing bodies as best practice in texture modification for dysphagia. This course will provide education and resources on the IDDSI framework for clinicians treating the pediatric population. Attendees will gain knowledge on how to best implement and execute the framework, which will empower them to guide caregivers and workplace administration alike. Target audiences include speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, nurses, and registered dieticians. This course is applicable to all care settings.
