Goals & Objectives

  • Understand the relevant anatomy and biomechanics of common shoulder overuse injuries, including thoracic outlet syndrome, biceps tendinopathy, suprascapular neuropathy, and subacromial impingement
  • Understand the mechanism of injury, common clinical presentation, and operative procedures to implement the most appropriate post-op guidelines and rehabilitation protocols following SLAP lesions, rotator cuff tears, and Bankart repairs
  • Evaluate and examine a patient with a possible rotator cuff pathology, and discuss the different repair techniques from an evidence-based perspective
  • Design and implement an effective rehabilitation program based on clinical and scientific research for common overuse injuries and post-op shoulder conditions

Section 1: The Shoulder Biomechanics

2 Chapters

The Shoulder: Overuse Injuries in Athleteskeyboard_arrow_down

Course
  • Thoracic Outlet SyndromeChapter 1

This chapter provides a thorough introduction to thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), including the anatomy, general prevalence, and types. Lenny Macrina covers neurogenic, venous, neurologic, and arterial compression and uses a detailed case study and exercise demonstration to provide the viewer with a comprehensive understanding of TOS.

  • Biceps TendinopathyChapter 2

To effectively recognize and treat biceps tendinopathy, the therapist must first possess a solid familiarity with the condition itself. Macrina provides this through a pathophysiology histological analysis, differential diagnosis, and examination in the lecture and through a case study.

  • Suprascapular NeuropathyChapter 3

Focusing on suprascapular neuropathy, this chapter provides thorough anatomical references as well as an introduction to the typical presentation of the condition and the essentials of a good exam. Macrina further explores his own experiences with suprascapular neuropathy through a case study.

  • Subacromial ImpingementChapter 4

The presentation, differential diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of subacromial impingement are all thoroughly examined in this chapter. Macrina explores the intervention, examination, and important conclusions for a patient with subacromial impingement. In addition, Macrina touches upon recent literature and anatomy. This chapter also provides exercise demonstrations and a case study.

Understanding Glenohumeral Joint Biomechanics and Exercise Implementationkeyboard_arrow_down

Course
  • Relevant Anatomy OverviewChapter 1

This chapter includes a brief overview of the functional anatomy of the shoulder complex. It is critical that the clinician fully grasp the anatomical structures and how they apply to the rehabilitation concepts later presented.

  • Glenohumeral Joint StabilityChapter 2

This chapter highlights the concepts of static and dynamic stability that aid in normal glenohumeral function. Muscle force couples are also presented to educate the clinician on what structures may be affected when a patient presents with a shoulder injury.

  • Biomechanics OverviewChapter 3

This chapter will discuss biomechanics and how they apply to the evaluation of a patient presenting with a shoulder injury. The fundamentals of a good shoulder exam are presented to aid the clinician in decision-making.

  • Creating an Evidence-Based Rehab ProgramChapter 4

This chapter discusses the relevant research that the clinician may use when constructing a rehabilitation program for shoulder patients. Understanding and interpreting the best available evidence aids the clinician in developing a safe and effective rehab program.

  • Biomechanics and Implementation of Shoulder RehabilitationChapter 5

This chapter discusses the specific exercises that are recommended based on the available research and the instructor’s experience as a sports physical therapist. A historical perspective of all of the research that culminates in a shoulder rehabilitation program can aid the clinician and help guide the patient’s plan of care. The ultimate goal is to create the safest and most effective rehabilitation program.

Section 2: Rotator Cuff

2 Chapters

Rehabilitation Following Rotator Cuff and Labral Repair Surgerykeyboard_arrow_down

Course
  • Introduction to the Anatomy and Involved Structures Post Shoulder SurgeryChapter 1

The relevant anatomy and involved structures will be briefly introduced. It is critical to demonstrate a good understanding of the importance of these structures as they apply to the postsurgical rehabilitation.

  • Clinical Presentation and Decision-MakingChapter 2

This chapter will highlight the common differential diagnoses when someone presents with a shoulder pathology. Understanding who would benefit from this surgery may help the clinician to better guide their patients.

  • Postoperative Rotator Cuff ConsiderationsChapter 3

This chapter will highlight some key issues to consider when planning and progressing a patient after a rotator cuff repair. Timeframes and protocol considerations are important to understand for various rotator cuff repair variables.

  • Rehab Specifics for a Rotator Cuff RepairChapter 4

Specific timeframes and guidelines are presented to help the clinician better implement an evidence-based rehabilitation program for their patient. Current research is also presented to aid the clinician’s postoperative rehab techniques.

  • SLAP II Lesions: Overview and SLAP ClassificationChapter 5

A brief anatomy overview and specific classification system is presented in order for the clinician to become better acquainted with the different SLAP presentations. This is a critical aspect to understand and will aid in the postoperative rehabilitation decision-making.

  • Clinical ExaminationChapter 6

This chapter will present the common exam techniques and help differentiate multiple diagnoses based on the literature and a good history taking. It is critical for the clinician to have a strong understanding of clinical presentation and how it affects the rehabilitation process.

  • Treatment of SLAP LesionsChapter 7

This chapter will discuss the surgical options and outline some specific rehabilitation guidelines for the patient beginning immediately after a surgery. A safe and progressive approach to rehab is important when progressing a patient after a SLAP repair.

Advanced Rehab for the Baseball Pitcher to Improve ROM & Strengthkeyboard_arrow_down

Course
  • IntroductionChapter 1

The anatomy, biomechanics, and unique profile of the baseball pitcher will be presented. It is critical that the learner understand this information in order to best assess and treat a baseball pitcher.

  • AssessmentChapter 2

This chapter will aid the rehabilitation specialist in understanding how to evaluate a baseball pitcher based off of the previous chapter’s information. In order to develop a good treatment program, the clinician should be able to evaluate numerous components that are often implicated as an injury risk. These include strength of the upper and lower body along with range of motion of the shoulder and elbow.

  • Common InjuriesChapter 3

This chapter will educate the clinician on common injuries observed in the baseball pitcher. Special considerations for the exact anatomy and mechanism of injury will be presented to aid in building a care plan for the athlete.

  • TreatmentChapter 4

This chapter will present an evidence-based treatment approach for the baseball pitcher. The latest research will be used to apply this knowledge to a well-designed treatment regimen to safely and quickly return the pitcher to the mound.
