This is the second course in a two part series, which provides the foundation of knowledge necessary to complete home evaluations and make effective recommendations for home modification and assistive technology. These recommendations will enable persons with disabilities to live in their community and age in place. This course explores the theoretical foundation of home modifications and basic construction principles, focusing on the common home modification recommendations. Marnie Renda presents clinically applicable case studies to ensure that participates can synthesize the information and begin using their new knowledge and skills immediately.

1. Theoretical Foundational Impact on Interventions

In the first chapter of this course, Marnie Renda reviews the theoretical framework as the foundation for home modification interventions. Participants will gain the ability to implement the Person-Environment-Occupational model when selecting interventions for persons living in the community.

2. Construction Principles for Healthcare Professionals

Chapter 2 will teach clinicians to understand basic construction principles used for common home modifications. Participants will learn to take the necessary measurements for toilet, doorway and shower modifications.

3. ADA Guidelines Impact on Home Modifications

Participants will review the ADA Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities and their impact on home modifications in residential settings. Marnie Renda demonstrates through case studies when the ADA is useful in daily practice, and when it is not. Participants will learn to recognize situations when the ADA must be followed.

4. The Law

In the final chapter of this course, Marnie Renda reviews the Fair Housing Amendments Act and its impact on home modification. In addition, she uses case studies to demonstrate the implementation of the knowledge gained from this course regarding theory, construction, and ADA requirements into practice.
